Timber Timbre - Lay Down In The Tall Grass (download link)

Timber Timbre

Timber Timbre had a new album out in 2011, and it led me back to some of their old stuff. Lay Down in the Tall Grass is haunting yet still has its uplifting moments. One of my favorites from 2009.

Lauderdale - Moving On (download link)

One of the things I love about music is how it can create the feel of a certain event or place. I used to spend a lot of time in the Muscle Shoals, Alabama area for work and really had a fondness for the place, its people, and its rich musical history even though I would never want to live there. Anyway, I heard “Moving On” by Lauderdale and instantly thought of my time in the Shoals. It’s a fine song, so I started researching Lauderdale. Turns out they are from Muscle Shoals. Not sure how they transported me back to Northern Alabama, but I’m glad they did.

Nickel Eye - Brandy of the Damned (Mark Ronson Remix) (feat. Wale)

Stick around for Wale’s verse. Takes the song up a notch or two.

Jarad Miles - Miles Away (download)

A quality folk song about roaming across the country, which I love (both the roaming and songs about roaming). Judging from his facebook page, he’s basically unknown, which is a shame. I found this on the great end-of-year list from Song by Toad, (which you should also check out, loads of interesting stuff on it.)

Terraplane Sun - Funnel Of Love

A fine rock and roll song that sounds like a mix of the Animals and Deer Tick. Love the organ.

Zoe Muth - Hey Little Darlin’ (download)

I am a fan of wit and of the steel guitar. This song has both.

Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside - Danger (download link)

Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside

This song starts innocently enough - I almost thought it was a laid-back cover of Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher” at first. But then Sallie Ford just starts wailing, and all of a sudden you’re hearing something special. The band keeps it tight and steady all the way through and lets Sallie’s voice lead the way. They are currently on tour in Europe, but I imagine they’ll be hitting a lot of spots in the US soon. Go see them when they do - Sallie Ford is a star.

The Heart Beats - Cryin’ Inside (download link)

This track is now 45 years old, but The Heart Beats would fit right in with any number of the female-fronted lo-fi rock acts out today.

Ramsay Midwood - Spinning On This Rock
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Ramsay Midwood sounds like a drunk telling stories while bellied up to a bar. And that’s what makes him great. The band is tight and the piano gives a nice saloon vibe, but Ramsay’s voice is the star. He slurs a bit and always seem to be a little off beat, and that just makes it better.
